Norman, Okla. - The Southern Illinois men's tennis team finished their fall season this past weekend at the ITA Central Regional at the University of Oklahoma. Freshman Adam Fabik, senior Falk De Beenhouwer, and sohphomore Brandon Florez were the only Salukis in action.
Fabik -- who came into play undefeated at 15-0 -- won his first two matches and advanced to the round of sixteen in the singles main draw. In the third round, Fabik lost to the No. 39 ranked player in the nation, Ashley Watling of Tulsa, ending his 17 match win streak and finishing 17-1 for the fall season.
Senior Falk De Beenhouwer and sophomore Brandon Florez each won two matches in their qualifying round. In the first round of the singles main draw, however, each lost to the No. 55 and No. 41 ITA nationally ranked players, respectively.
Adam Fabik (17-1) and Falk De Beenhouwer (13-5) each broke the SIU fall singles wins record, which was a three-way tie for first with 10 wins, the last occurrence of which was Lukasz Soswa in 2003. Fabik is also only 10 wins away from tying Mickey Maule's 1990 second place mark of 27 wins in a season, and 21 wins away from Maule's 1988 all-time record of 38 wins.
Men's Tennis will begin their Spring season in January at the MVC Individual Tournament in Des Moines, Iowa.
