CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University volleyball standout Jennifer Berwanger was named the 2010-11 recipient of the Charlotte West Scholarship.
The Berwanger sisters: Katie, Kristie and Jennifer |
As a four-year starter for the Salukis, she's been named to six all-tournament teams and ranks in several categories in the SIU record books. The senior ranks in career attack attempts (second, 3,955), career digs (second, 1,554), career kills (fourth, 1,348) and career attacks per set (third, 8.97). She is also the Salukis' active leader in double-doubles with 56 in four seasons.
Academically, Berwanger carries a 3.89 GPA and received her Associates of Arts degree in applied sciences (physical therapists assistant) in August, 2009, while also pursuing her Bachelor's Degree in therapeutic recreation. She is a two-time MVC Scholar-Athlete and was named to the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V Second Team. This season she was named to the 2010 ESPN Academic All-District V First Team, making her eligible for Academic All-American.
Jennifer is the third member of her family to receive the prestigious scholarship. Her oldest sister, Katie, was named the recipient in 2003-04 as a member of the women's basketball team and her sister and former teammate, Kristie, was honored in 2008-09.
"For the last 10 years, a Berwanger sister has been making her mark in the classroom and on the court for Saluki Athletics," said SIU Senior Associate AD Kathy Jones. "We are very proud of the accomplishments of Katie, Kristie and Jennifer, including receiving this award."
The Charlotte West Scholarship, which was first established in 1997, is awarded to a junior or senior female student-athlete who has lettered two years and carries at least a 3.25 GPA. The recipient must also have demonstrated an interest or a commitment to ensuring equitable benefits or enhancing opportunities for female athletes, and must display qualities of dedication, integrity, responsibility and leadership.
"Each one of these young ladies is an excellent representative of a scholar-athlete and a fine person," said West. "If there were two sisters, it would be double my pleasure in having them honored for a scholarship in my name, but with three, it is triple the pleasure."
The award was named in honor of West, who served as the Salukis' head women's basketball coach from 1959-75 and SIU's Director of Women's Athletics from 1975-87. Once the men's and women's athletics departments merged in 1987, she became Associate Athletics Director and remained in that position until her retirement in 1998.
