CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The Missouri Valley Conference office announced its post-season awards for the 2010 volleyball season at its pre-tournament banquet Thursday.
All-conference honors are voted on and selected by the league's coaches.
Southern Illinois senior outside hitter Jennifer Berwanger earned All-MVC Second Team honors for her efforts this season. The Lake Zurich, Ill. native received First Team recognition in each of the previous two years, making her just the fourth player in school history to do so.
Last weekend saw the end of Berwanger's all-star career as a Saluki. She leaves the court after five years in the maroon and white, dominating several categories in the school record books. Berwanger finished third all-time in sets played in a career (450), third in matches played in a career (126), fourth in career kills (1,374) second in career attempts (4,059) and second in career digs (1,577). She closed out her career at SIU with 58 double-doubles.
Berwanger was also named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete first team earlier this week, having earned ESPN Academic All-District V First Team honors. She received MVC Offensive Player of the Week and MVC Scholar Athlete of the Week after her record-breaking performance against Evansville on Oct. 22 when she recorded a career-high 29 kills. She finished the season ranked fourth overall in the Valley in kills per set, averaging 3.62.
Regular season champion UNI's Bre Payton was named the MVC Player of the Year for the second straight season, as the junior setter for the 11th-ranked team in the nation. Wichita State middle blocker Sarah McGee was the league's Defensive Player of the Year, while UNI's Ellie Blankenship earned Libero of the Year honors. Christine McCartney, outside hitter at Missouri State, was named Freshman of the Year. UNI's Bobbi Petersen was named Coach of the Year.
