Dunbar named Prairie Farms/MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week

ST. LOUIS - Dan Dunbar of Southern Illinois University and Tonya Nero of Wichita State University have been selected the Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Week, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced today. Dunbar and Nero were honored for their performances during the period of October 25-31.
Now in its 12th year of existence, The Valley's Scholar-Athlete program is sponsored by Prairie Farms, Roberts and Hiland Dairies. On a weekly basis, the Conference honors its student-athletes for their athletic performance for a one-week period and academic success in the classroom.
A member of the Southern Illinois men's cross country team, Dunbar, a senior from O'Fallon, Ill., captured the individual title at the 2010 State Farm MVC Championship in Augusta, Kan., at the RAFT Golf Course on Saturday, October 30.
The MVC Male All-Conference Athlete of the Year, Dunbar, who has a 3.878 cumulative grade-point average in aviation flight, ran the course in a time of 24:29.38, defeating runner-up Michael Disher of Indiana State by nearly 16 seconds.
A member of the Wichita State women's cross country team, Nero, a senior from Maracas, Trinidad and Tobago, became the first Shocker since 2007 to claim the individual title at the State Farm MVC Championship on October 30.
The MVC Female All-Conference Athlete of the Year, Nero, who has a 3.80 cumulative grade-point average in chemistry, completed the course in a time of 17:25.34 to propel the WSU program to a league record sixth-straight Conference crown.
To qualify for Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing. Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
