KENNESAW, Ga. - Southern Illinois swept day two of the Phyllis Rafter Memorial Tournament, grabbing wins over Kennesaw State and Mercer. SIU is now 7-2 on the season, winning their last five games.
The Salukis handed KSU their first scoreless game of the weekend with a 4-0 victory over the Owls. SIU scored four runs off six hits, including a home run from Allie Hanson.
Southern Illinois played back-to-back wins on Saturday, earning a 3-1 victory over Mercer for their second win of the day. The Salukis recorded three runs off nine hits and four hits against the Bears, holding their opponent to five hits and one run.
Southern Illinois 4 Kennesaw State 0
Freshman pitcher Brittney Lang earned her first collegiate win after pitching a complete game against Kennesaw State. The Leavenworth, Kan. native allowed only four hits and three walks, while striking out three at the plate.
Junior outfielder Chelsea Held hit an RBI double to centerfield, driving in Morgan Barchan for a 1-0 lead in the third inning.
Senior Allie Hanson hit her first home run of the season, with a two-run shot over the center field fence, giving SIU a comfortable 3-0 lead over the Owls in the fourth inning.
The Salukis went on to score one more run in the sixth inning for a 4-0 win over KSU.
Hanson went 1-for-2 from the plate with one home run and two RBI. Chelsea Held recorded an RBI to help the Saluki offense, marking her fifth of the season.
Southern Illinois 3 Mercer 1
SIU got on the board in the second inning when Corinna Gonzalez scored, bringing in Natalee Weissinger for a 1-0 lead followed by a bases-loaded walk from Second baseman Alicia Garza to put SIU up 2-0.
Mercer was able to put one run on the board in the sixth inning, but Garza answered with a home run in the bottom of the sixth, giving SIU a 3-1 edge over the Bears. This marked Garza's second home run on the weekend, the team's eighth. She went 2-for-3 from the plate, recording two hits, two RBI and drawing one walk.
Danielle Glosson earned the win for the Salukis, pitching her third complete game of the season. The junior pitcher struck out five batters while allowing only one walk.
Gonzalez went an impressive 2-for-3 from the plate with one RBI while freshman Morgan Barchan went 1-for-2, drawing one walk and recording one hit.
SIU will face Ball State Sunday in their final game at the Phyllis Rafter Memorial Tournament. Game time is set for 10:30 a.m. ET.
