SAN JOSE, Calif. - San Jose State used three, three-run innings to defeat the Southern Illinois baseball team, 10-1, Saturday evening at Municipal Stadium in the Jack Gifford Memorial Tournament.
SIU's second loss to the Spartans in four days drops its record back to 5-9 on the year and SJSU improves to 6-5. The Salukis need a victory over Santa Clara on Sunday to end the Jack Gifford Memorial Tournament with a .500 record.
Spartan second baseman Karson Klauer killed the Dawgs Saturday by going 4-for-4 in the game with five RBIs. He drove in two runs in the second, two in the fourth and hit a solo home run to lead off the sixth inning.
Southern Illinois' lone run on the night came in the bottom of the fifth. Shortstop Michael Stalter doubled down the left-field line to score Jordan Sivertsen from first base.
San Jose State right-handed pitcher Blake McFarland (2-1) struck out seven Salukis as he picked up the win. His complete game was the second thrown against Southern Illinois in as many days.
SIU starter Jimmy Cornell (1-2) received the loss Saturday. He was pulled in the second inning after walking four batters and giving up three runs. San Jose State had nine hits off of the five Saluki pitchers used in the game.
Third baseman Tony Lepore, Brian Bajer and Stalter led Southern Illinois as they each had two hits Saturday. The Salukis as a team posted nine hits in the game.
