RIO VERDE, Ariz. - The Southern Illinois women's golf team will compete in their second tournament of the spring, as they head to the Rio Verde Invitational in Rio Verde, Ariz. The 54-hole, three day tournament is hosted by Western Michigan University and will take place on two courses, Quail Run and White Wing.
A total of 18 teams will compete at the tournament, including Missouri Valley Conference rivals, Missouri State and Bradley. Six Mid-American Conference opponents will join the Salukis, including Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Ohio, Toledo and Western Michigan. Penn State, Michigan and Minnesota will represent the Big Ten, while Cincinnati, Xavier, Arknasas-Little Rock and Northern Arizona also join the competition. Defending team champion Kansas returns in 2010 looking to become the first team to win back-to-back titles in this event.
The Salukis head into the tournament, hoping to gain ground in early spring competition.
"We are excited to get out of the cold and play in Arizona," head coach Diane Daugherty said. "We hope to improve from Kiawah and break the 320, then 310 scoring mark."
SIU posted a team score of 977 (331-323-323) at the Kiawah Island Classic, its first competition of the spring.
Competition will begin Saturday and continue through Monday. Live scoring can be followed at www.GolfStat.com.
