CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Saluki men's tennis team won their second match in as many days, this time taking down Chicago State, 5-2, Saturday at the University Courts.
SIU dominated third through fifth singles against the Cougars, as the Dawgs did not lose a single game in those three matches.
"It was great to be able to play outside for the past two days as we head to Florida for two matches," said Southern head coach Dann Nelson. "Chicago State was not as strong as they have been in the past, but you have to give them credit, especially their top two players, who both won even after the team match was decided."
Falk De Beenhouwer continued his dominant play from the past three weeks, topping CSU's Jerrick Boone 6-0, 6-0. The win extends the Belgian's streak to five matches.
Equally brilliant on the courts were Orhan Spahic and Jordan Snyder. Spahic - who had four of his previous seven matches go to three sets - made quick work of Uri Kuyoro 6-0, 6-0. Meanwhile, Snyder defeated Jonathon Majors 6-0, 6-0.
The Salukis captured the doubles point for the third straight match of the season, after only winning twice in the previous six matches.
In No.1 doubles, Brandon Florez and Chikara Kidera cruised past Mehmet Duru and Ivan Mojsejev, 8-1. Anton Leonenko and Mpilo Migogo also handily won, beating Kuyoro and Majors, 8-0.
The Dawgs will now head south to sunny Boca Raton, Fla., for their annual spring break trip. Their first of two matches is Tuesday against Buffalo. The Salukis and Bulls are slated to begin play at 10 a.m. EST in the South County Tennis Center.
