DES MOINES, Iowa - The Saluki men's tennis team put a scare into Drake Sunday in Des Moines, Iowa, but was unable to hold the momentum through singles, falling, 5-2.
Southern Illinois took the doubles point to begin the match - something even last year's Missouri Valley Conference championship squad was unable to do in two tries. It was also the fifth time in the last six matches that the Salukis captured a doubles point.
Mpilo Migogo and Falk De Beenhouwer, Saturday's stars against Creighton, continued their hot play in doubles, as the duo defeated Jean Erasmus and Jonathan Hadash, 8-6. In only their fourth match playing together, the pair is 3-1 in doubles.
Meanwhile, freshmen Orhan Spahic and Jordan Snyder - in only their third match together - also pulled together a win on the doubles side, downing Drake's duo of Ryans - Ryan King and Ryan Drake - 8-5.
Yet, the singles play proved to be the Dawgs' downfall.
Spahic clinched the lone win for Southern, as the Sarajevo, Bosnia, native slipped by Ryan Drake 6-1, 7-6 (7-5).
The Salukis will finish out their regular season schedule on April 17 with Senior Day, when they host MVC-leading Wichita State at 11 a.m.
