CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Saluki men's tennis team was unable to provide a happy ending on Senior Day Saturday in Carbondale, as they were swept by the Wichita State Shockers, 7-0.
Despite the loss, senior Mpilo Migogo and freshman Brandon Florez provided Southern Illinois with some great singles matches.
Migogo, who joined the Salukis in January, captured the first set in top singles against Sven Kasper. However, Kasper would return the favor in the second set to bring on a third and final set. The Saluki senior stayed close with his Wichita State opponent, but eventually bowed out in super tiebreaks 2-6, 6-0, 10-6.
Florez also put forth an impressive performance in second singles, where he took on Shocker junior Vlad Marinescu. After dropping the opening set in tiebreakers, Florez battled back to force a third set. Yet, Florez would find a similar fate as his teammate, falling 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 10-3.
Three seniors - Migogo, Anton Leonenko, and Lucas Waked - were honored before the match for their contributions to the men's tennis program.
The Salukis will now prepare for the Missouri Valley Conference Championship in Wichita, Kan., which begins on Friday, April 23. The Dawgs' first round opponent will be determined after Sunday's matches.
