CARBONDALE, Ill.- The Southern Illinois Softball team will host conference rival Illinois State this weekend in a three-game series at Charlotte West Stadium. The two teams will battle this weekend, as SIU defends the No. 1 spot in the Missouri Valley conference.
Southern Illinois (27-13, 12-1) is currently sitting at the top of the MVC standings heading into this weekend's series. Illinois State remained undefeated for most of the conference season, before swept in a doubleheader against Drake on Thursday. The Redbirds are now 10-2 in Valley play, sitting just behind the Salukis.
In addition, SIU is hosting its annual Strike Out Cancer weekend. The team has raised over $200 for Relay for Life so far, and hope to raise more this weekend. Moons, stars and luminaries will be for sale at the game, benefitting Relay for Life. The Salukis will be wearing pink UnderArmour jerseys, one of which will be autographed by the team and auctioned off at Saturday's game. SIU diving coach Joy Zhao, a breast cancer survivor, will be throwing out the first pitch at Saturday's game.
The Salukis and Redbirds will face off in a doubleheader Saturday at noon, followed a final game Sunday at noon.
