Volleyball wraps up spring play with home tournament victory

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois volleyball team went 8-1, sweeping three teams at the annual Saluki Spring Tournament Saturday in Davies Gym.
The Salukis swept the SIU Club team (25-6, 25-13) and Jefferson College (25-21, 25-12) before taking down Murray State in three sets (24-26, 25-18, 15-8) to take first in their pool.
In cross-over play, SIU played UT-Martin, sweeping the Skyhawks, 25-20, 25.21.
Alicia Johnson led the Salukis with 26 kills on the day, hitting .357 with just six errors in 56 attempts. Jen Berwanger added 22 kills, hitting .206.
Middle blockers Jasmine Conner and Alysia Mayes pitched in 21 kills each. Conner hit a team-high .581 with just three errors in 31 attempts and Mayes hit .471 with just five errors in 34 attempts.
Berwanger led the team with 37 digs on the day, followed by Johnson with 21. Defensive specialists Bailey Yeager and Lauren Blumhorst combined for 29 digs. Setters Amanda Arnold and Rachael Brown pitched in 16 and 10 digs respectively.
Brown led the Salukis with 52 assists and Arnold added 45.
At the net, Mayes led the team with five solo and seven block assists and Conner added three solo and seven block assists. Johnson and Berwanger recorded two solo and three block assists each.
The Salukis will not compete in the Missouri Tournament scheduled for April 24.
