SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - After two years with the Southern Illinois women's basketball program, assistant coach Tanya Bauer was named the head women's basketball coach at Division II Slippery Rock University Monday.
In her first season with SIU, Bauer mentored the post players in addition to coordinating the recruiting efforts. During her second season she helped develop the Saluki guards along with her recruiting duties.
"I appreciate the opportunity I've had to be a part of the Saluki program the past two years," Bauer said. "I am going to miss the players who have worked so hard."
Bauer becomes a head coach for the second time in her career with her appointment at The Rock. She previously served as the head coach at the University of Minnesota Duluth for the 2007-08 season before coming to SIU.
"I would like to thank Director of Athletics Mario Moccia for all of his assistance during my tenure here at Southern," Bauer added. "I am grateful for his support of my pursuit to become a head coach again."
Bauer took her first head coaching position after two stints as an assistant coach at the Division I level. The first with Drake University (2000-2003), where the team advanced to the NCAA tournament two of the three seasons, including a sweet sixteen appearance. After Drake, Bauer was an assistant at Santa Clara University (2003-2007), where the team made a trip to the NCAA tournament and WNIT during her four years. Bauer began her career as an assistant coach at her alma mater, the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire (1999-2000).
