Track and Field sends 26 athletes to regionals

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois track and field teams will send 26 athletes to the NCAA West Preliminary Round in Austin, Texas, May 28-29.
The athletes will compete to advance to the NCAA National Championships June 9-12.
For the No. 24 ranked women's team, 15 athletes will compete in 12 events posting 22 marks on the West Region List led by Jeneva McCall and Sasha Leeth in three events each. McCall ranks first in the discus, third in the hammer and eighth in the shot put, while Leeth is fifth in the hammer, 21st in the shot and 28th in the discus.
Gwen Berry also holds top marks in the throws, seventh in the hammer and 10th in the shot. Rickael Roach will compete in the discus and hammer, Kim Fortney will also compete in the shot, Olga Ciura in the hammer and Toni Whitfield in the javelin.
In the jumps, Malaikah Love will compete in the triple jump (21st) and the long jump (45th), while Miracle Thompson advanced in the pole vault and Kacey Oceguera in the high jump.
Kendra Deck ranks 16th in the region in the 400-meter hurdles heading into the meet, while teammate Tredene Davis ranks 31st. Meredith Hayes ranks 25th in the 100-meter hurdles and Kandise Thompson is 22nd in the 400-meter dash.
In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Megan Hoelscher makes her second-straight regional appearance.
The Saluki men will send 11 athletes in nine events, Joe Paradiso and Ryan Shumaker competing in both the shot put and hammer throw. Jake Deiters ranks 17th headed into the discus throw and J.C. Lambert is the top-rated thrower, 11th in the hammer. Collin Otto will also compete in the hammer.
Brandon Deloney and Sammy Biggs will compete in the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes respectively.
In the distance events, Jason Ordway will compete in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Daniel Dunbar in the 5,000-meter run and Mohamed Mohamed in the 10,000-meter run.
Cody Doerflein ranks 10th in the pole vault heading into regionals, the top-ranking for the men.
