CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois track and field athlete Toni Whitfield was named to the 2009-10 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Whitfield, a native of Johnston City, was named to the third team after carrying a 4.00 grade point average in civil engineering with a minor in business administration and mathematics. She was named a 2009 Student Laureate at the Lincoln Academy of Illinois. The senior was a two-time Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete, a three-time recipient of the MVC Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award and a four-time member of the MVC Honor Roll, earning Dean's List honors every semester at SIU.
On the track, Whitfield was a three-time All-Missouri Valley Conference performer in the javelin and 800-meter run. In 2010, she was a West Regional preliminary qualifier in the javelin. She ranks fourth all-time in the indoor and outdoor javelin at SIU and fourth in the indoor and 10th all-time in the outdoor 800m.
To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 15,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
