SIU leads MVC schools in final Directors' Cup standings

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University led all Missouri Valley Conference schools by placing 95th in the final standings for the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup that is presented annually by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics.
Behind the backing of the women's outdoor track and field team's school record ninth-place finish at nationals that scored 68.25 points for the Salukis, SIU finished with a total 187.25 points. Northern Iowa was the next closest MVC school in the standings, as the Panthers finished five spots behind SIU at No. 100. A total of 285 teams compete in the Division I race.
Football scored 60 points, women's indoor track and field netted 54 points and the men's outdoor track and field program registered five points to round out SIU's grand total of 187.25.
Southern Illinois finished in 166th-place in the 2008-09 standings and in 101st-place in 2007-08. SIU's 77th-place finish in 2006-07 was the last time the Dawgs led all MVC schools in the final standings.
The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports -- ten women's and ten men's.
The Directors' Cup is presented annually by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), Learfield Sports and USA Today to the best overall collegiate athletics programs in the country in NCAA Divisions I, II, and III and the NAIA. Stanford took home its 16th-straight Division I title this season.
