CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois volleyball hosted its Maroon and White preseason scrimmage Saturday morning in Davies Gym, showcasing the 2010 team.
With almost everyone back from last year's roster, the team chemistry and overall maturity on the court was evident.
The match consisted of three sets to 25. The veteran squad split into two teams, and although players switched between the two teams a few times to give the coaching staff looks at different lineups, the teams stayed relatively the same throughout the morning. Saluki Maroon came away with all three matches over Saluki White.
SIU's improving defensive effort showed, as liberos on both sides played well. Blocking came together nicely for the Salukis as well, as they recorded a combined 20 block-assists between the two teams.
Senior outside hitters Jennifer Berwanger and Sydney Clark, middle blocker Alysia Mayes and right side Alicia Johnson put together a steady offensive attack.
Southern will have the beginning of next week to prepare and fine tune its skills before heading to Iowa City to participate in the University of Iowa Tournament. The Salukis will be up against Green Bay on Friday, Aug. 27 at 4:30 p.m.
