CARBONDALE, Ill. - After an extended winter break, the Southern Illinois track & field teams will return to action Friday and Saturday for the Saluki Open.
The meet will begin Friday at 4 p.m. with the weight throw, long jump, and pole vault. The action will continue the next morning, beginning at 10 a.m. with the shot put.
"I'm really looking forward to this weekend and getting started," said head coach Connie Price-Smith. "Coming off of a long break, it will be nice to see where everybody is at."
SIU will be one of 19 schools competing inside the SIU Rec Center, where they will face MVC foe Missouri State, regional rival Southeast Missouri State, and SWAC power Alabama State.
Southern will also be looking to add to their high marks from their last meet - the Saluki Fast Start on Dec. 3 - where five Salukis captured event titles. Meanwhile, junior Jeneva McCall and freshman Erin Atkinson both posted national top 15 marks in the weight throw. Additionally, McCall's mark of 72-01.00 also landed her a spot in the NCAA Indoor Championships this March in College Station, Texas.
"I think it should be a really good, competitive meet and I'm just looking forward to getting the season going," Price-Smith said.
Last year, the Dawgs notched 13 event titles at the Saluki Open.
