SCOUTING ILLINOIS STATE
The Redbirds enter the matchup on a two-game winning streak after defeating Creighton and Drake last week in Bloomington. Katie Broadway led ISU with 15 points in the win over the Bulldogs Saturday after scoring 16 Thursday against the Bluejays. Emily Hanley led the Redbirds against Creighton with 21 points. Hanley is the team's leading scorer with an average of 14.6 points per game while Broadway is second on the team at 12.2 points per game. Kenyatta Shelton leads the team with an average of 7.6 rebounds per game while Hanley is close behind at 7.3 rebounds per game. Senior Amanda Clifton leads the team, and the MVC, with an average of 5.0 assists per game. The Redbirds were picked fourth in the Valley preseason poll. ISU is 2-5 on the road this season, including an 0-3 road mark in MVC play.
SERIES WITH ILLINOIS STATE
Illinois State leads the all-time series between the two schools 40-33. The Redbirds are currently on a five-game winning streak against SIU.
YOUTH DAY COMES TO SIU ARENA
Thursday is Youth Day at SIU Arena as Saluki Athletics welcomes local elementary and middle schools for a morning of educational sessions regarding teamwork followed by the women's basketball team's noon matchup with Illinois State.
STRONG START FIZZLES AT UNI
SIU stuck with MVC leader Northern Iowa through the first 15 minutes, but couldn't sustain the strong start in a 79-39 loss to the Panthers in Cedar Falls. Southern never held a lead in the game, but the Salukis kept the margin within six throughout much of the first half. UNI went on a 12-0 run during the last five minutes of the first half, and SIU never seriously challenged the lead again. Katrina Swingler led the Salukis with 14 points and eight rebounds in the loss.
SWINGLER SHOOTING SHARP
Senior Katrina Swingler is off to a strong shooting start in MVC play. Her league-leading field goal percentage of .538 in MVC play is .100 points ahead of what she shot during the Salukis' non-conference slate. Swingler ranks ninth in the MVC for the season with a .470 shooting percentage. The Teutopolis, Ill., native shot a career-best .481 from the field during her freshman campaign in 2007-08.
GLAD TO BE BACK
After playing three consecutive games on the road and starting MVC play with five of seven games away from Carbondale, SIU will be happy to be back in SIU Arena this week. Though the Salukis don't yet have a Valley win to speak of, Southern played its best MVC games at home. In its five road Valley games, SIU committed an average of 29.8 turnovers and averaged a 33-point loss. In two MVC games at home, Southern's turnover rate has been significantly less at 16 per game and the Salukis have lost by an average of 15 points. SIU will look to take advantage of its home-heavy remaining schedule as seven of its remaining 11 games are at SIU Arena.
SALUKIS VS. THE STATE
Southern Illinois is 226-128 all-time against other schools in the state of Illinois. The Salukis fell to in-state rivals Northern Illinois and Bradley this season and still have three matchups remaining against in-state opponents -- two against Illinois State and one more against Bradley.
SALUKIS LOOK TO `PACK THE HOUSE' SATURDAY AGAINST INDIANA STATE
Saluki Athletics looks to "Pack the House" Saturday as the women's basketball team takes on Indiana State at SIU Arena with tipoff scheduled for 2:05 p.m. Saluki Athletics will give away more than $2,800 in prizes, including a 46-inch Sony Bravia LED TV, an Apple iPad, a Sony Camcorder and a Nintendo Wii in addition to gift certificates. Brown Dawg's Playland will be available for kids in the SIU Arena main entrance, which features an inflatable bounce house and basketball game. Fans will also be treated to a halftime performance by the All-American Frisbee Dogs.
