CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois men's and women's golf teams swept Missouri Valley Conference Golfer of the Week honors, the conference announced Wednesday. Junior Jake Erickson took the honor on the men's side, and freshman Ryann Gilley earned the award on the women's side.
Southern Illinois' Jake Erickson picked up his first career medalist honor by winning the Skyhawk Fall Classic on Monday and Tuesday. Erickson shot 70-70-69 (209, -7) to win the tournament by two strokes. His score is the fifth lowest three-round score in school history. Erickson is the first Saluki to win a tournament since Jordan Cox in 2007, and his win helped the Salukis win their first tournament as a team since March 2009. Erickson's honor comes one week after Brandon Cauldwell earned his first MVC Golfer of the Week honor, giving the SIU men their first back-to-back golfers of the week since 2003.
Ryann Gilley, the Salukis' lone freshman, came out on fire at the MAC Preview in Fishers, Ind. where she edged out Toledo's Piyathida Chaiyapan by one stroke. Gilley, a native of Flossmoor, Ill., finished the tournament, held at the par-72 Hawthorne Golf & Country Club, +5 with a 149 (73-76). Gilley becomes the third Saluki in as many tournaments to take home top honors.
