WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Southern Illinois men's golf wrapped up play at the Purdue Fall Invitational on Tuesday, finishing 11th in the team standings.
The Salukis finished the three-round event at 56-over par after rounds of 24-over, 19-over and 13-over.
Emil Elkjaer Petersen led Southern Illinois individually, finishing tied for 20th at 3-over par. Petersen closed the tournament with a 1-over 73 in the final round.
Head coach Justin Fetcho praised Petersen's performance on a demanding course.
"Solid event for Emil this week," Fetcho said. "To finish top 20 any week is special, but this was a demanding golf course and you really had to golf your ball and you couldn't fake it around. It was very nice to see him have a strong finish in the event."
River Stilley finished tied for 44th at 10-over par, while Oliver Ulrich finished 62nd at 14-over. Michael Mikus and Jamen Sanders both finished tied for 65th at 16-over, while Francis Lockwood finished tied for 80th at 21-over.
Fetcho said the team as a whole struggled with unforced errors and adjusting to the challenges presented by the course.
"The team overall struggled this week," Fetcho said. "We had way too many unforced errors. We need more discipline and the ability to adjust when we play, and it was hard to get that from everyone in each round this week."
Fetcho added that the course punished mistakes and required strong decision-making throughout the tournament.
"This golf course will penalize you if you get greedy or get on the wrong side of the hole, and we just didn't do a good job handling it as an entire team," Fetcho said.
Southern Illinois now has one event remaining on its fall schedule, and Fetcho said the team will use the time between tournaments to continue improving.
"We have one event left this fall and we have some time to work and get ready to go," Fetcho said. "We have been doing a lot of good things, but we've just been having too many unforced errors to cover them up. We will continue to look to learn and grow from it and become better."
