LAHAINA, HI — Southern Illinois men's golf wrapped up its fall schedule at the Ka'anapali Classic by OUTRIGGER, finishing 17th in the team standings.
The Salukis finished the three-round tournament at 33-over par. Southern Illinois improved throughout the event, posting rounds of 17-over, 11-over and 5-over.
Jamen Sanders led Southern Illinois individually, finishing tied for 70th at 8-over par. Sanders saved his best round for the final day, closing the tournament with a 1-under 70.
Emil Elkjaer Petersen finished tied for 74th at 9-over par after a final-round 74, while Oliver Ulrich finished tied for 77th at 10-over and closed with an even-par 71.
River Stilley finished tied for 85th at 11-over par and Michael Mikus finished tied for 102nd at 15-over.
Cy Norman and Francis Lockwood competed as individuals. Lockwood finished tied for 116th at 19-over, while Norman finished 123rd at 24-over.
Head coach Justin Fetcho said the challenging weather conditions played a factor throughout the week.
"We just didn't have our best stuff this week," Fetcho said. "The weather presented some challenges for us this week and unfortunately we just didn't handle it well enough."
With the fall portion of the schedule complete, Fetcho said the team will turn its attention toward making improvements during the offseason. "We have a lot of things to work on in the offseason to continue to see improvements," Fetcho said. "Right now, we have got to see the team start to make some of the progressions that we would expect to see by this point in the season."
Fetcho also pointed to unforced errors and decision-making as areas the Salukis will need to address before returning to competition. "We are just making too many careless or unforced errors when we play and we just have to continue to focus on playing the game from strength instead of the course applying the pressure to us," Fetcho said.
The offseason will provide Southern Illinois with an opportunity to work on both the mental and physical aspects of the game. "Our focus in the offseason will be a lot of mental stuff but each player has some things physically that we have to work on to continue to work on our development," Fetcho said. "It starts at the top with me on making sure we can continue to work extremely hard on the areas of the game that are causing us to not score consistently enough."
Fetcho said the fall season provided the team with several opportunities to learn and improve heading into the spring. "The fall has provided us with several learning opportunities and now it is up to us to use those moments to get better," Fetcho said.
The Ka'anapali Classic marked the final tournament of the fall schedule for Southern Illinois.
