ST. LOUIS - Saluki junior Jewel Hampton was named Missouri Valley Football Conference Newcomer of the Week, the league office announced Sunday. Hampton rushed for 110 yards and two touchdowns against Eastern Illinois on Saturday. He added career highs with four receptions and 59 receiving yards. Southern Illinois won, 45-28, on Senior Day and put up its biggest point total of the season.
Hampton's performance was his fifth 100-yard game this season and second in a row. Hampton now has 943 rushing yards this season, just 57 yards away from becoming the 19th player in school history to rush for 1,000 yards in a single season.
Hampton has 15 rushing touchdowns on the season, which is good for the seventh-best single-season total in school history. He has six multiple-touchdown games this season, including each of the last three weeks.
Hampton came to SIU from the University of Iowa. He transferred after losing back-to-back seasons to knee injuries.
Hampton is the third Saluki to be honored by the conference this season. Lineman Jessy McMullin was named Offensive Lineman of the Week after the season-opening win against SEMO, and placekicker Jackson MacLachlan was honored as the MVFC Special Teams Player of the Week after kicking the game-winning field goal against Missouri State.
