CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Missouri Valley Conference announced Monday Southern Illinois volleyball player Lauren Blumhorst has received the MVC State Farm Good Neighbor Award.
Blumhorst joins nine other MVC student-athletes as recipients for the fall season based on her outstanding citizenship and strong academic standing.
A native of Forsyth, Ill., Blumhorst holds a cumulative 3.873 GPA in math education and is a two-time Honorable Mention MVC Scholar-Athlete.
Blumhorst's community service background includes participating in the Parrish Elementary School Sports Night and Pumpkin fest, the SIU Athletics Santa's Shoebox, the MVC State Farm Just Read Program, the SIU Athletics Halloween Bash, the SIU Athletics Thank-A-Thon, the SIU Athletics Talent Show and Trick or Treat for Canned Goods. Additionally, Blumhorst has made visits to the Boys and Girls Club of Carbondale and collected toiletries to donate to a local women's shelter. Last spring, she and several other SIU volleyball players raised $900 for Race for the Cure.
A three-year letterwinner for Saluki volleyball, Blumhorst had to sit out her senior season after suffering three concussions during her junior year. Despite the setback, Blumhorst showed perseverance by remaining an active member on the team in more of a coaching role. She helped mentor Southern's defensive specialists throughout the year.
