SIUE TOPS SALUKIS IN OVERTIME
The Southern Illinois women's basketball team couldn't preserve a two-point lead to end regulation and SIU Edwardsville dominated the Salukis in overtime for a 70-60 win Saturday at SIU Arena. SIUE center Raven Berry corralled an offensive rebound and scored on a putback as time expired to force the extra period. The Cougars took advantage by scoring the first 10 in overtime, and the Salukis couldn't recover. Cartaesha Macklin tied a season-best with 20 points to lead the Salukis while Teri Oliver added 12 points, four assists and three steals and Charnise Mitchell chipped in eight rebounds.
SHANNON'S TIES BLOCKS RECORD
Sophomore center CiCi Shannon blocked two shots Saturday against SIUE, officially tying Kathy Kampwerth (1985-89) for SIU's career record in blocks at 102. Shannon leads the MVC and ranks seventh nationally with a season average of 3.7 blocks per game.
MACKLIN ON THE ATTACK
Saluki freshman Cartaesha Macklin has shined for SIU ever since being inserted into the starting lineup three games into the season. In her four starts, Macklin has averaged 17.3 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. Macklin leads all MVC newcomers in scoring and rebounding with season averages of 14.0 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. She has been to the free throw line an MVC-leading 37 times and ranks eighth in the Valley with a free throw percentage of 83.8 percent.
