CARBONDALE, Ill. — Southern Illinois University Athletics announced the women’s basketball locker room in the new Boydston Center has been named in recognition of former Saluki coach Cindy Scott.
“I am so honored and humbled that the SIU women's basketball locker room is being named in my honor,” Scott said. “It was a privilege to lead the SIU women's basketball program for 21 years and this honor is incredible. There are really no words that can express my sincere appreciation.”
The most successful coach in program history, Scott led the Salukis from 1978-98. During her tenure, SIU amassed a record of 388-215 with three Gateway Conference Championships and four NCAA Tournament berths, including a Sweet 16 appearance in 1987. Scott guided the Salukis to eight 20-win seasons and the program enjoyed a streak of 15 consecutive winning seasons under her tutelage.
“The unexcelled win-loss record and the numerous championships speak for themselves. This performance alone would mandate the women's basketball locker complex be named in coach Scott's honor,” said former SIU associate athletics director and coach Charlotte West. “The caring and leadership she provided for the athletes who played for her coupled with her outstanding public relations skills make the naming a no-brainer. It is truly a fitting honor."
A 1994 inductee to the Saluki Athletics Hall of Fame, Scott is in her 13th year as Assistant Athletics Director at Bentley University in Waltham, Mass.
The naming of the new Cindy Scott Women’s Basketball Locker Room was made possible through the fundraising efforts of West, Trish Guyon and former SIU player Vicky King.
