Salukis split day one at Houston Hilton Plaza Invitational

HOUSTON, Texas- The Southern Illinois softball team opened its 2011 season with a win over Ohio, but couldn't follow up in game two as its fell to No. 8/11 Michigan at the Houston Hilton Plaza Invitational Friday.
Game One: SIU 12 , Ohio 8 In dramatic fashion, Cristina Trapani hit a grand slam in the bottom of the eighth to give the Salukis a victory in their opening game of 2011.
With the lead bouncing back and forth throughout the entire game, the Salukis led leading 7-4 into the seventh. Ohio then scored four runs in the top of the inning and the Salukis answered right back on a Haley Gorman RBI to force extra innings. The Salukis held the Bobcats in the top of the eight
Mallory Duran went 2-for-3 while Morgan Barchan had a double and two RBI. Jayna Spivey went 2-for-3 in her Saluki debut.
Brittney Lang earned the victory for the Salukis while starter Danielle Glosson struck out six in six innings of work.
Game Two: Michigan 19, SIU 4 5 innings
The Salukis couldn't keep pace with the No. 8/11 Wolverines who pounded out 19 hits en route to a 19-4 victory.
