Clarksville, Tenn. -- The Southern Illinois Men's Tennis team suffered their first lost of the year Friday at Austin Peay, 4-3, falling after fighting back from an 0-3 start.
Doubles started play for the day and ended up being the crucial point for the match. SIU lost in doubles 2-1, the pair of senior Falk De Beenhouwer and sophomore Orhan Spahic being the sole winners for the Salukis.
In singles, the Salukis split with the Governors 3-3. Winning for the Salukis were three of the four freshman on the SIU roster: Adam Fabik (7-6 (4-0), 1-6, 6-1), Jorge Cavero (6-4, 6-1), and Carlos Do Val (7-5, 6-4). Tied at 3-3, the fate of the match rested on the final match of the day between Orhan Spahic and Austin Peay's Joao Pagan, in which Pagan triumphed 7-5, 6-3.
"We are still learning how to play doubles," said head coach Dann Nelson. "We learned a lot about what we need to do in order to improve. If we can learn from our mistakes it will make us stronger."
Men's Tennis' next match will be in Carbondale on Feb. 20 against Saint Louis, with play beginning at 10 a.m.
