CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois men's tennis team improved to 2-1 on the season by sweeping Saint Louis, 7-0, on Sunday.
SIU lost only three sets all day in their rout of the Billikens at the Sports Blast indoor facility.
In singles, the Salukis were led by Adam Fabik, who beat Joe Flanagan for the third time this season at the No. 1 position in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. Fabik -- who went 17-1 last fall -- is undefeated for the spring season at 3-0.
Also undefeated in singles are freshmen Jorge Cavero and Carlos Do Val, who are each 3-0. Against SLU, the two Salukis defeated Drew Feder 6-3, 6-3; and Patrick Kella 2-6, 6-2, 10-6, respectively.
Other Salukis who picked up victories were senior Falk De Beenhouwer, who beat Vuk Poledica 6-2, 6-3; sophomore Brandon Florez who came from behind to win against SLU's Nishaad Balachandran 3-6, 6-4, 6-4; and sophomore Orhan Spahic, who also came from behind to top Dave Welkener 6-4, 6-7 (4), 10-8.
The Salukis improved to 4-2 on the spring season in doubles -- which includes the undefeated pair of senior Falk De Beenhouwer and sophomore Orhan Spahic (2-0) -- who defeated SLU's duo of Nishaad Balachandran and Patrick Kella 8-5.
"I'm pleased with the way we played," said head coach Dann Nelson. "We've been working all week with our doubles and I thought we played really well today. I think it just took some time for the guys to gel with their partner, and they've really played well and with a lot of energy, and we just took it to them today."
