ST. LOUIS - Southern Illinois thrower Jeneva McCall has been named State Farm Missouri Valley Conference women's field athlete of the week, the conference announced Wednesday.
McCall claimed two Laker Turf Building and GVSU Big Meet records over the weekend in the weight throw and shot put. On Friday's invitational events, the junior thrower shattered her own record in the weight throw with a distance of 73-11.50, topping the old mark by five feet. McCall convincingly defeated Indiana State's Felisha Johnson, teammate Gwen Berry, and Michigan State's Beth Rohl to take first in the event. Then on Saturday, she topped teammate Gwen Berry's mark in the shot put with a toss of 54-04.50, topping Berry and Michigan State's duo of Shatora Lewis and Ashley Lawrence in the process.
This marks the fifth time in five weeks that at least one Saluki athlete has earned a weekly conference honor.
Despite turning in stellar performances over the weekend at the GVSU Big Meet, both the men's and women's track teams fell in the most recent USTFCCCA computer rankings. The women's team dropped three spots it No. 14, while the men tumbled two positions to No. 43.
SIU will return to the track this Friday, as they head to Eastern Illinois for the EIU Friday Night Special. This will be their last meet before the MVC Indoor Championships, which will be Feb. 26-27 on the campus of the University of Northern Iowa.
