HILTON HEAD, S.C. -- The Men's Tennis team of Southern Illinois improved their current road trip record to an even 1-1 record with a 5-2 win over George Mason on Tuesday.
In singles, SIU won four of six matches. Posting match wins for the Salukis were sophomores Brandon Florez (4-6, 6-3, 6-3) and Orhan Spahic (7-5, 7-5); and freshmen Adam Fabik (6-2, ret.) and Jorge Cavero (6-0, 6-1).
After winning only one doubles match against Georgia Southern in Monday's loss, the Salukis swept the Patriots for the doubles point. Leading the charge for SIU were the one-loss pairs of Adam Fabik and Brandon Florez (8-2) -- who are on a six match winning streak -- and Falk De Beenhouwer and Orhan Spahic, who defeated George Mason's Jordan Borsanyi and Michael Phaup, 8-6. Also winning in doubles for Southern Illinois were Carlos Do Val and Jorge Cavero (8-6).
"We wanted to make a statement in doubles today and I think we did that," said head coach Dann Nelson.
Overall, the Salukis are still winning over 75 percent of the matches they play in with a .767 winning percentage.
SIU will stay in Hilton Head to complete their road trip tomorrow against South Carolina State.
