CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois head volleyball coach Brenda Winkeler announced Wednesday that Peter Chang has been hired as the new assistant coach with the program.
Chang comes to SIU after a two-year stint as a volunteer assistant coach for Indiana University. He was part of the staff that guided the Hoosiers to a 23-12 overall record in 2010 en route to an NCAA Sweet 16 appearance.
"I am very appreciative of this opportunity to join Saluki volleyball," Chang said. "I am looking forward to working with Coach Winkeler as part of a great program and a highly competitive conference."
At Indiana, Chang worked with the defensive specialists and primary passers. He was also responsible for scouting opponents and film breakdowns. In the summer of 2010, Chang served as the camp director for IU summer volleyball camps.
"I am excited to add Peter to our volleyball staff," said Winkeler. "He has been instrumental as a volunteer at Indiana helping them to a Sweet 16 berth this past season. He will be in charge of our passing and defense as he was at IU."
Prior to his tenure at Indiana, Chang served as the head coach for the women's club volleyball team at Ball State University from 2005-08. During that time, he guided his team to four top-five finishes at NIRSA nationals and was named 2007 NIRSA National Coach of the Year.
Chang also has high school and club coaching experience, working as an assistant coach at Muncie Central High School for six seasons where his team won an Indiana state championship in 2004 and was the state runner-up in 2003, '06 and '08.
He got his start in club volleyball as the head coach for the Munciana Volleyball Club from 1999-2008. At that position, Chang trained over 100 Division I athletes and his team captured five top-five finishes on the national circuit.
Chang earned a Bachelor's Degree from Ball State in 2006.
