CARBONDALE, Ill. -- In a thrilling match that went down to the wire, Vincennes University came out on top with the final point, besting Southern Illinois, 4-3, Tuesday at Sports Blast.
The Salukis (6-4) were up 2-1 after the first three singles matches when the Blazers fought back and took two of the last three. Sophomore Orhan Spahic (7-6, 6-3) and freshmen Adam Fabik (6-3, 6-2) and Jorge Cavero (6-3, 6-2) each won singles matches for SIU.
Tied at three going into doubles, Southern Illinois needed to take two of the three doubles matches for the win. Vincennes swept the Saluki tandems of Adam Fabik and Brandon Florez (7-9), Jorge Cavero and Carlos Do Val (4-8), and Falk De Beenhouwer and Orhan Spahic (3-8) quickly for the final point and the win. It marked only the second doubles loss of the season for the duos of Fabik/Florez and De Beenhouwer/Spahic, who are both 6-2.
"I thought we had a chance to win, and I think that if we all would have shown up and played like we're capable of playing, I think we would've won," said head coach Dann Nelson. "When that doesn't happen, you're not going to get the W. Give credit to Vincennes though, they played great."
Saluki Men's Tennis will be in action again next Wednesday at home against Eastern Illinois, with play beginning at 3 p.m
