CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois volleyball team will make the short trip to Cape Girardeau, Mo. this weekend, diving into spring ball to compete in a six-team tournament at Southeast Missouri State.
Joining SIU and SEMO in Saturday's one-day tournament will be Jefferson College, SIU-Edwardsville, Truman and East Central College. The teams are divided evenly into two pools, and will go head-to-head in best-of-three matchups with rally scoring to 25 points.
Based on the outcomes of pool play, each team will be seeded one through three and the one, two and three teams will play each other. This gives Southern Illinois and head coach Brenda Winkeler their first chance to possibly compete against former associate head coach Julie Yankus, who is now the head coach at SEMO.
"This tournament will be a great opportunity for us to get out on the court and try some new things with a younger lineup," Winkeler said. "We already have a young team, and with Lauren Blumhorst out due to injury, we will get some different looks with our freshmen and sophomores."
Blumhorst, a junior libero on the 2010 squad, battled concussions for the first part of last season and will be sidelined in spring play for the same reason.
SIU will host its own spring tournament Saturday, April 16, at 9 a.m. in Davies Gym.
