CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Julie Yankus was named head women's volleyball coach at Southeast Missouri State University Thursday. Yankus becomes the eighth head coach in the program's history.
A native of New Berlin, Wis., Yankus will begin her first head coaching position after spending the last five years as associate head coach at Southern Illinois University. She coached the outside hitters, while overseeing recruiting, scouting and equipment.
"I'd like to thank John Shafer, Cindy Gannon and the rest of the search committee for this opportunity," said Yankus. "I think there is a great opportunity for this program to get to the top tier of the Ohio Valley Conference. I am excited and look forward to working with this group of young women."
Prior to SIU, Yankus spent two years as the top assistant coach at Georgia State, where she later obtained her master's degree in sport administration.
Yankus played volleyball from 1998-2001 at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and was part of the winningest class in the school's volleyball history. She was a member of four NCAA Tournament teams out of the Midwestern Collegiate Conference, presently the Horizon League.
An MCC All-Academic Team honoree in 1999 and 2001, Yankus graduated with a bachelor's degree in business administration in December of 2002.
"We are very excited to have Julie Yankus accept the women's volleyball position at Southeast," said Associate Director of Athletics Cindy Gannon. "Julie brings a very strong background with her outstanding playing career and coaching experience, and we feel that she is a perfect fit to guide our women's volleyball program. We welcome Julie to Southeast Missouri State."
Yankus attended Catholic Memorial High School in Waukesha, Wis. She led the Crusaders to a State Championship her senior year and a runner-up finish her junior season. Yankus also played club volleyball for the Milwaukee Sting from 1996-98. She then later returned to coach the Milwaukee Sting from December, 2002 to May, 2003.
Yankus, who is a member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), will officially begin her head coaching duties on March 22, 2011.
