Berry, Smith earn USTFCCCA Midwest Region honors

NEW ORLEANS - The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced Monday the USTFCCCA Region Athletes and Coaches of the Year for the NCAA Division I indoor track & field 2011 season, as voted on by the nation's coaches.
Among the regional winners, Gwen Berry was voted as the Midwest Region women's field athlete of the year and assistant coach John Smith took the region's women's assistant coach of the year award.
Berry, a senior from St. Louis, leads the nation in the weight throw with a season's best of 74-06.25 (22.71m). Additionally, she is 22nd in the nation for the shot put. The Saluki placed third in both the shot put and weight throw at the Missouri Valley Championships.
In his seventh year at Southern Illinois, Smith has five Salukis on the national list in the weight throw, including two of the top three. In addition, two of his athletes are in the top 20 in the shot put. Jeneva McCall was named the Missouri Valley Conference outstanding female athlete after defending her title in the shot put and weight throw.
