CARBONDALE, Ill. - UT Martin used five pitchers to keep the Saluki bats at bay as Southern Illinois fell for the second time this season to the Skyhawks, losing 5-3 Tuesday at Abe Martin Field.
UTM (11-15) came into the game with a team ERA of 6.68, but its pitching staff held Southern (13-23) to just nine hits and the three runs.
"This was a very frustrating day for me," interim head coach Ken Henderson said. "We just didn't show up to play. If we learn from this and move forward, that is the only thing we can take from a day like today."
Saluki senior pitcher Andrew Bever drew the loss, his first since March 29. He falls to 3-3 on the year following the game where he allowed 10 hits and four runs (three earned) in seven innings. After leading SIU to shutout victories in each of his last two starts, Bever saw his scoreless innings pitch streak end at 17.
Skyhawk reliever Alex Boshers (2-0) was credited with the win, throwing a scoreless seventh and eighth innings. Dan Tobik recorded the save for UTM, his first of the season.
Chris Murphy, Jake Welch and Jordan Sivertsen all had two hits in the game for Southern. Sivertsen drove in one run and now has 10 RBIs in his last four games.
SIU and UT Martin traded runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings.
UTM scored one run off of RBI singles in each of those innings. The Skyhawks had a chance for two runs in the fourth, but Murphy's arm kept it at just one. He threw out Matt Haynes at the plate to end the inning when Haynes was trying to score from second on Cory Stooksbury single up the middle.
Wes Neece's single up the middle in the third scored Dustin Huff and Welch's opposite-field single with two outs in the fourth plated Nick Johnson to tie the game at two. Sivertsen then singled home Murphy with two outs in the fifth to make it a 3-3 game.
Two Saluki errors in the seventh inning cost Southern a run and gave the Skyhawks back the lead. Chase Okey's second RBI of the game, on a double just inside the first base bag, added on an insurance run for UTM as they went on to win 5-3.
