CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southeast Missouri State hit four home runs and handed Southern Illinois its biggest loss of the season, pounding SIU 11-4 Tuesday at Capaha Field.
Southern's midweek woes continued and the Salukis (15-25) fall to 0-7 in Tuesday games this year. The seven-run loss to SEMO comes after the Redhawks defeated the Salukis, 14-8, in Carbondale back on April 12. It was Southeast's third-straight win over Southern.
The Redhawks (25-15) scored all 11 of their runs from the third through sixth innings and their six-run third opened the flood gates. Southeast finished with 16 hits in the game to SIU's 13.
Second baseman Brock Harding drove in two runs for the Salukis with his sixth-inning double. Harding had his fifth three-hit game of the season, going 3-for-5 with a run scored.
Senior Blake Pinnon and freshman Donny Duschinsky both had RBI singles in the eighth to account for SIU's third and fourth runs in the game. Pinnon and Duschinsky both went 2-for-4 in the game.
SIU senior Andrew Bever drew the loss Tuesday, falling to 3-4 on the year. Southeast pitcher Jon Dicus picked up the win to improve to 4-3. The Salukis used five pitchers in the game and the Redhawks threw seven.
Southern Illinois returns home this weekend to host Wichita State for a three-game series beginning Friday at Abe Martin Field. The Salukis are currently in a three-way tie for first place in the Missouri Valley Conference and are one game ahead of the Shockers.
