CARBONDALE, Ill. - Morgan Barchan and back-to-back home runs highlighted the afternoon as the SIU softball team took both games of a Missouri Valley Conference doubleheader from Bradley at Charlotte West Stadium.
The Salukis (22-12, 6-2 MVC) made quick work of the Braves (8-30, 1-9 MVC) in game one with a 10-0 run ruled victory while game two needed extra innings to decide a winner, with the home team coming out on top with a 2-1 victory in nine innings.
The victories puts the Salukis at 5-0 at home in conference play this season as they look for the series sweep tomorrow at Charlotte West Stadium with first pitch scheduled for noon.
Game One: SIU 10, Bradley 0 (five innings)
The Salukis used two five-run innings to run rule the Braves in game one 10-0 in five innings.
The Saluki bats were hot, as they broke loose for nine hits including back-to-back home runs by Jayna Spivey and Taylor Orsburn in the fourth.
"I thought we did a good job of making adjustments early and scoring early and I was pleased of how we scored in the game," Head coach Kerri Blaylock said.
Haley Gorman and Christina Trapani both went 2-for-3 with one RBI each while Mallory Duran, Michelle Bradley, and Natalee Weissinger all added hits in their first run ruled conference win of the season.
Danielle Glosson struck out seven in the effort and picked up her 13th win of the season.
"She's (Danielle) doing a good job and mixing her pitches really well and that's the thing with her is that she can mix it up and keep the people guessing on what she's going to throw rather than the at-bat" Blaylock said.
Game Two: SIU 2, Bradley 1 (nine innings)
It took the Salukis nine innings to knock off the Braves in game two as Morgan Barchan provided a game winning, bases loaded RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to pull off a 2-1 win.
The Braves took the lead early off a wild pitch in the second while the Salukis answered on a Braves error in the fourth to put up one run apiece.
Tied 1-1 after seven innings, the two teams battled each other in the final two innings when the Braves walked the bases loaded for Morgan Barchan, who with one swing of the bat scored the game winning RBI single as she went 2-for-4 in game two.
"Morgan hit the well all day long and she's been doing a great job offensively for us and I felt like if we just hung in there at the end and I knew our pitching was there that we could pull it out in the end," Blaylock said.
Danielle Glosson came in relief of starting pitcher Alex Peters as she earned both victories on the afternoon, moving her to 14-8 on the year and 4-2 in MVC action.
The two combined for 10 strikeouts, each recording five, as Peters put in 5.1 innings of work before Glosson came in relief.
Chelsea Held and Natalee Weissinger added 2-for-4 performances while Jayna Spivey had a hit to help the Salukis total seven hits in the game.
