PHILDELPHIA, Pa. (Sports Network) - Southern Illinois safety Mike McElroy was listed as one of the Football Championship Subdivision's top 10 defensive backs in a preseason look at the FCS by the The Sports Network.
This is the second-straight season that McElroy has appeared on TSN's preseason list of the top 10 defensive backs.
McElroy was granted a medical redshirt season in 2010, when an ankle injury in the second week of the season at Illinois caused him to miss the rest of the year. McElroy returns for his fifth season and looks to lead the Saluki defense that returns eight starters. He enters the 2011 season with 28 career starts under his belt to go along with 174 tackles and 11 interceptions.
Mike McElroy, Southern Illinois, S, Sr., 6-1, 210
After earning preseason All-America honors last season, McElroy missed most of the campaign because of an ankle injury. The quarterback of the Salukis' defense had intercepted seven passes and made 78 tackles as a junior in 2009. He has both an intelligent and physical style. The Salukis are counting on him to come back strong as they try to rebound from a tremendously disappointing season.
