Bever leads Baseball to another shutout over Illinois

MARION, Ill. - Brock Harding had a career-high three RBIs and Southern Illinois shutout Illinois, 9-0, Tuesday night in the fourth-annual Interstate Baseball Classic at Rent One Park.
Senior pitcher Andrew Bever improved to 4-4 on the year by throwing six scoreless innings and allowing just three hits. Bever, who threw eight scoreless innings in a 3-0 win at Illinois, April 13, now has thrown 14-straight scoreless innings against the Illini (17-23),.
This was Bever's third combined shutout of the season and the fourth shutout by Southern Illinois (17-27). The Salukis end up winning two of the three games against the Fighting Illini this season.
"(Bever) did an outstanding job tonight, but you got to give our offense a lot of credit for giving him a 5-0 lead," interim head coach Ken Henderson said. "To his credit, he went out there and continued to pitch very effectively with the lead and didn't give them a chance to get back in the game."
SIU had 14 hits in the game and Harding, shortstop Jake Welch and left fielder Jordan Sivertsen all had three hits. Welch scored twice and drove in one while Sivertsen had two RBIs and scored once.
The Salukis had seven runs off of eight hits through the first two innings. Harding, Brian Bajer and Sivertsen all delivered with two-run doubles.
Harding and Welch both drove in runs on their third hits of the game in the fifth inning, pushing SIU's lead up to 9-0.
Bever meanwhile held the Fighting Illini to just three hits and no runs through six innings and he retired eight-straight batters before being relieved by Matt Murphy at the start of the seventh.
Murphy threw a scoreless seventh, Todd Eaton pitched a scoreless eighth and Austin Johnson followed in the ninth to keep the shutout victory.
