CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois cross country teams will open the 2011 season Friday by hosting the annual Saluki Early Bird.
The event starts with a women's 4K race at 5:30 p.m. with a men's 4K race immediately following. SIU, Missouri and Rend Lake College will all have runners competing, although the event will not be scored.
The course's starting line is located beyond the outfield fence of Abe Martin Field, adjacent to the construction site of the Saluki Track and Field Complex on the south end of SIU's campus.
The SIU men's team begins the season ranked ninth in the Midwest Region by the USTFCCCA. The Saluki men were picked second in the Missouri Valley Conference preseason poll while the women's team was selected fifth.
