The Saluki men's golf team finished a successful first day at the Wasioto Winds Fall Kick Off on Monday afternoon. The team played 36 holes and sits in second place with 18 holes remaining on Tuesday. SIU is just two strokes out of the lead, thanks to four golfers having career high rounds. Four of five golfers have broken par for at least one round, and three Salukis are currently under par.
"I'm pleasantly surprised in the way we golfed," head coach Leroy Newton said. "I knew we were capable of these scores; but considering it's the first tournament of the year, I'm very pleased we were able to compete so well. I was worried about some opening jitters, but we're playing well. Hopefully, we can continue this play tomorrow."
The Salukis got off to a great start. In the first round of the season, the team shot 281 (-7) to take an early lead. The score is tied for the fifth lowest 18-hole team score in school history. Junior Brandon Cauldwell led the charge in the first round with a 66 (-6), a new career high that tied the third best single-round score in Saluki history.
Jeff Miller and Joe Goelzhauser also set single-round career bests in the first round, shooting 69 (-3) and 71 (-1), respectively.
Southern Illinois shot even par in the second rounding, ending the first day at seven under par. Junior Jake Erickson shot a five-under-par 67, shattering his previous career best round as a Saluki by four strokes.
Northern Kentucky leads the tournament and is two strokes ahead of SIU entering Tuesday. Complete team and individual results are in the PDF at the top of the page. The final 18 holes of the tournament will be played tomorrow, starting at 8 a.m.
