CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois track and field thrower Jeneva McCall finished strong Thursday as she competed in the hammer throw at the IAAF World Championships in Daegu, South Korea.
The senior thrower, representing Team USA, recorded an impressive mark of 68.26 meters to finish just three positions out of qualifying for the final round. The throw marked the second-best of her career, her top mark being the 69.55 meter heave that qualified her to compete at the Worlds.
The women of Team USA, coached by SIU track and field head coach Connie Price-Smith, hold a medal count of 4 golds, 2 silvers, and 2 bronzes through Thursday.
Notably, USA thrower Jillian Camarena-Williams took home a bronze in the shot put for the first-ever medal in the event by an American woman at the World Championships. The previous best American shot put finish at the Worlds was Price-Smith's fifth-place showing in 1997.
Also at the World Championships, former Saluki Bianca Stuart competed in the long jump for her native Bahamas. Stuart finished five spots out of qualifying for the final round with a jump of 6.44 meters. She is set to participate in the 2012 London Olympics for Team Bahamas.
The IAAF World Championships will wrap up competition in Daegu this Sunday.
