Saluki freshman safety Anthony Thompson has been named the Defensive Back Performer of the Week by the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA). In addition, sophomore defensive back Courtney Richmond, sophomore tight end MyCole Pruitt and sophomore linebacker Tyler Williamson each received an honorable mention from the CFPA at their respective positions for their performance in SIU's 38-21 victory over Youngstown State this past Saturday.
Thompson was named Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week on Sunday. He set a school record with a 100-yard interception return for a touchdown in Saturday's game. He also recovered a blocked punt near the goal line and nearly scored another touchdown. In addition, he recovered a fumble on a YSU kick return in the final minute of the first half. He had three tackles in the game.
Richmond recovered Thompson's fumble for a touchdown on the blocked punt and also had a tackle and a pass breakup in the game. Pruitt led the Salukis with six receptions for 93 yards and a touchdown, and Tyler Williamson recovered a fourth quarter fumble in the end zone in the victory.
SIU has had six players honored by the CFPA in the last two weeks. On Oct. 15, junior Bryan Presume earned Linebacker Performer of the Week honors, while junior quarterback Kory Faulkner was an honorable mention for his play against Northern Iowa.
The Salukis have won three games in a row and are tied for first place in the MVFC.
