ST. LOUIS -- Four Southern Illinois cross country athletes were named Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes, the Valley announced Tuesday.
Scholar-Athlete honors require athletes to meet performance standards, as they must finish among the first 20 runners at the conference championship and hold at least a cumulative 3.2 GPA and be at least a sophomore in athletic and academic standing to earn a spot on the MVC Scholar-Athlete team.
Southern had the most Scholar-Athletes with a 4.0 GPA honored (two) and the most men honored out of the other Valley teams (three).
Sophomore Sadie Darnell (11th place, 4.0 GPA, Elementary Education) received her first MVC Scholar-Athlete honor and was one of two Saluki Scholar-Athletes with a 4.0 GPA. Darnell continued her stellar season at the MVC Championships last Saturday, placing just six seconds shy of All-MVC in 11th place.
As for the MVC champion Saluki men's cross country squad, junior Brian Dixon (6th place, 3.95 GPA, Accounting) was named for a second straight season to go along with his second straight All-MVC honor. Fellow junior Lucas Cherry (20th place, 3.97 GPA, Accounting) also collected his second straight Scholar-Athlete honor, and sophomore Evan Ehrenheim (19th place, 4.0 GPA, Engineering) received his first Scholar-Athlete honor.
The Salukis will make a last push for nationals next Friday, Nov. 9, at the NCAA Midwest Regional in Springfield, Mo.
