Love named MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week

ST. LOUIS -- Southern Illinois track and field multi-event athlete Malaikah Love has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week, the league announced Wednesday.

Love scored points in three events at the 2012 State Farm MVC Indoor Championship on Saturday-Sunday, February 25-26, at Cedar Falls, Iowa to help the Saluki women to a fourth place finish.

The senior from Carbondale, Ill. who holds a 3.477 cumulative grade-point average in dental hygiene, won the pentathlon with an MVC-record 4,092 points, which ranks sixth nationally and automatically qualifies her for the NCAA Indoor Championship.

She also won the triple jump with a leap of 41-03.75 and took third in the long jump with a distance of 19-06.75.

This honor marks the second time this season Love has been named the MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week.
