SIU VS. INDIANA STATE
Southern leads its all-time series with the Sycamores 41-35, but Indiana State has won the last seven meetings. ISU has swept the season series and eliminated SIU from the MVC tournament the past two seasons. The Salukis' last win in the series came in Carbondale during the 2008-09 season. The Sycamores topped Wichita State Sunday in Terre Haute, Ind., to end a three-game losing streak. Senior center Shannon Thomas leads four Sycamores with double-digit scoring averages with an average of 12.6 points per game to go along with a team-leading 9.0 rebounds per game. Deja Mattox is second on the ream with an average of 12.4 points per game while Brittany Schoen averages 10.5 per game and Anna Munn figures for 10.0 per game.
LAST TIME THEY MET
Southern rallied from a 19-point first half deficit to take a lead in the second half, but the Salukis couldn't complete the comeback in a 72-66 loss on New Year's Day in Terre Haute, Ind. Teri Oliver led SIU with 18 points while Alexus Patterson picked up the Salukis' first double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Also for the Salukis, Cartaesha Macklin added nine points, five rebounds and seven assists. Shannon Thomas led Indiana State with 20 points and nine rebounds.
SALUKIS POWER PAST EVANSVILLE
SIU used a strong opening half to run to its biggest win of the season, 72-46 over Evansville Sunday at SIU Arena. All 11 Salukis that entered the game registered in the scoring column, led by Cartaesha Macklin's 15 points. Also for SIU, Teri Oliver added 13 points and Alexus Patterson picked up her fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
SALUKIS MAKING PROGRESS
SIU's win over Evansville was its fourth MVC win of the season, matching the best Valley win total of the Missy Tiber Era. The Salukis also won four conference games in Tiber's inaugural season in 2009-10. Southern has already posted its highest overall win total of the Tiber era with eight thus far.
THE HOME STRETCH
The Salukis host Indiana State and Illinois State this week to end the regular season with three consecutive games at SIU Arena. Southern has the opportunity to end the year over .500 at home with a pair of wins over the Sycamores and Redbirds. The Salukis sit at 6-6 at home thus far. SIU hasn't posted a winning record at home since the 2008-09 season, when the Salukis went 8-5 at the Arena.
SEE YOU THURSDAY
No matter the outcome of this week's games, the Salukis have already assured themselves either the 8 or 9 seed in next week's State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. SIU will play Bradley at 4:05 p.m. March 8. This marks the fifth-consecutive season Southern will play on Thursday in the MVC Tournament.
PLAYING THE PERCENTAGES
SIU shot a season-best 52.7 percent from the floor in Sunday's win over Evansville, which included a 70.8 percentage in the first half. SIU is 8-2 on the season when shooting 40 percent from the field or better. Conversely, the Salukis are 0-17 when shooting under 40 percent.
CATCH THE MACKLINSANITY
SIU point guard Cartaesha Macklin moved up to 9th in SIU history for points in a season during Southern's win over Evansville Sunday. The Mayo, Fla., native has scored 454 points through last week. She ranks third in the MVC with a season scoring average of 16.8 points per game and ranks third nationally in scoring among freshmen. Macklin broke the SIU freshman scoring record and single-season free throw record earlier this season.
SOUTHERN'S DYNAMIC DUO
This season marks only the third in SIU history in which two Salukis have scored 400 plus points and also the third time two players have combined for 900 plus points. Through last week, Cartaesha Macklin sits at 454 points for the season and Teri Oliver sits at 447. Their combined 901 points ranks as the third-highest two-player scoring total in school history.
