JACKSON, Tenn. - Jake Erickson won his second tournament of the year and led Southern Illinois to a second-place finish at the Grover Page Classic at the Jackson Country Club. Erickson became the second golfer in school history to win two tournaments in the same season.
"I'm proud of the kids," head coach Leroy Newton said. "Jake played extremely well, but everyone contributed. We had been having one bad round in our other spring tournaments, but we put together three solid rounds these last two days."
Erickson was tied with Murray State's Patrick Newcomb after the regulation 54 holes, but Newcomb's par on the 10th hole won him the scorecard playoff and medalist honors for the tournament. Erickson was named to the four-man Grover Page Classic All-Tournament team.
"Jake played great golf for us," Newton said. "As far as I'm concerned, he's a co-medalist. If he would have played a playoff, I think he would have come out on top."
Joe Goelzhauser played the best golf of his career, setting a three-round personal best score (219, +3). Goelzhauser tied for fourth in the tournament, marking the first time this season SIU has placed two individuals among the top five in the field.
Jeffrey Miller improved his score each round. After firing a 77 and 75 in the first two rounds, respectively, Miller led the team in the third round with an even-par 72. Miller tied for 16th overall. George Tate (236) and Jared Harp (242) rounded out the Saluki scoring.
The Salukis are back in action April 2-3 for the ASU Redwolves Intercollegiate, their final tune-up before the MVC Championships on April 30-May 1.
