ROCKFORD, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois men's tennis team fell for a second straight day, this time to Northern Illinois, 7-0, at the Boylan Tennis Center in Rockford, Ill.
The Salukis (2-4, 0-0) were overmatched against the Huskies (9-3, 0-0), who are 9-1 at home. Southern never fought into a third set and only managed to force one tiebreak all day.
The lone Saluki win came at No. 2 doubles from junior Brandon Florez and freshman Martijn Admiraal, who snapped a three match losing streak with a victory against NIU's Roman Turtygin and Frederic Cadieux, 8-4. The regionally ranked duo -- who moved back down to No. 2 -- are 2-0 at the second spot, as opposed to 1-3 at No. 1.
This was the second sweep the Salukis have already suffered this season. Southern was only swept twice all last season.
"We finally played well as an entire team against Marquette yesterday, and I really thought if we brought the same intensity today against Northern that we would have a good chance to win," said head coach Dann Nelson.
"Northern outplayed us in almost every match today," Nelson said. "We must learn to keep our composure when things are not going our way and fight through adversity."
The Salukis return to action March 12 against South Carolina State to kick off a series of matches in Hilton Head, S.C., over spring break.
